Why This Is Different
I'm currently touring with ABC and Belinda Carlisle. Your lessons are informed by what I'm doing right now on real stages — not a career I left behind.
Everything I teach comes from nearly four decades of playing bass professionally. Lessons are enjoyable, structured around music you like and completely pressure-free — learn at your own pace and have fun in the process!
It's never too late to start. Most of my students are living proof of that. No pressure, no grades, no judgement — just great music, proper technique, and lessons built around where you want to go.
About Your Teacher
My professional career started in 1989 and I haven't left the stage since. I've performed and toured around the world with artists including Bruce Dickinson, Go West, Nik Kershaw and Paul Young, recorded at Abbey Road and played iconic venues including The Royal Albert Hall.
Since 2005 I've been the bassist for Martin Fry's ABC — a role I continue to this day. I've also been playing in Belinda Carlisle's band for many years, with a stadium tour opening for Take That scheduled for 2026.
Teaching came naturally. I love passing on what I've learned from years on stages shared with some incredible musicians. Learn at your pace, around your musical taste, and without any pressure — whether you want to play your favourite songs, refine your technique, understand how the bass fits into a band, or simply enjoy the instrument for yourself.

One-to-One Bass Lessons
We start with the foundations that make everything else possible — posture, hand position, timing, strength building and tone. The same fundamentals I rely on every night on stage.
We learn songs by ear, the way most great bass players do. No notation, no tab — just listening, studying feel and playing. It unlocks a much deeper connection with the instrument and opens the door to improvisation naturally.
Private lessons at my studio near Epsom, Surrey. One hour per session. Most students choose to study at least twice a month — many study more frequently once they get started. Online lessons are also available for students further afield.
What Students Say
Last summer I went to see ABC at an outdoor gig. I searched on the internet to see who the bass player was and found Andy's website. I saw that he offered bass tuition. I'd always had a hankering to learn, but never really got underway. So I dropped Andy a line. Over a year later I'm still playing. Andy's teaching style is patient and supportive. He teaches technique first, which meant I felt comfortable moving around the fretboard very quickly — then we worked on songs and the bass really came to life. The ‘starstruck’ me also enjoys hearing tales about life on the road — which is an added bonus. If you want to give bass guitar a go, Andy is your man. I did, and haven't looked back.
— Steve
Andy is a great bass teacher. Coming to him as a complete beginner, he has been patient and supportive. His mix of teaching essentials alongside learning bass lines to favourite songs means both fulfilling and enjoyable lessons. Couldn't recommend Andy enough.
— Lou
How often does the opportunity arise to be taught from scratch by a seriously great bass player? Ever patient, he plans his lessons with real care — and even a beginner can expect to find themselves learning to play along with songs very quickly.
